Advent means arrival and is the four-week season in the church calendar year preceding Christmas. The season is characterized by waiting and longing for God and what God assures the world through Christ: hope, peace, joy, love.
Advent is the dark before the dawn; the candle burning brightly in a deep forest; the star way off in the black; the contrast and the quiet; a time to grieve and reflect; a time to hope and trust. Advent is the unsteady confidence that God will come through.
For the last six years I have written poetry during the season of Advent. I write to reflect on the story of scripture and the themes of the season. This year I’m inviting you to join me.
Advent may or may not be familiar to you. Whatever your history with Advent, please join me this year in creating and making through the season. Write, draw, sing, play, design, bake, preform – whatever your medium, use it to explore and express through Advent.
Each Sunday in Advent I’ll invite you to reflect on a theme with me. And on each Sunday night in Advent I’ll be hosting an Instagram Live Artists & Advent moment where we’ll pause together, light a candle and read a passage of scripture. I’ll also interview an artist each week to share about their work and experience during Advent.
November 29 HOPE

Whether you consider yourself an “artist” or not, would you join me? Use #ArtistsAndAdvent and tag me in your posts/stories so we can share the work as we go! Special thanks to Jess Wilson for designing this lovely artwork for our journey! We are featuring her work throughout the season at Living Waters Church.
